The Sulpur Crested Cockatoo is a gregarious bird roosting in noisy flocks amongst the trees in the district. This bird is common in most timbered country throughout northern, eastern and southern Australia, including Tasmania. Nests are built in tree hollows usually high in eucalypt trees near water. The female lays two white eggs which are incubated for 30 days. Both parents prepare the nest cavity, incubate and care for the young.

They feed on seeds, grain, nuts, fruit, bulbs, and insects and their larvae and supplement their diet by descending on and stripping the fruit trees so carefully nurtured by the local gardeners.

As part of their repertoire of calls, the Sulpur Crested Cockatoo has  an extraordinarily loud, harsh screech that they use with abandon as they fly over the town at about dawn.
